Why New Pipes Corrode and Leak: The Importance of Dielectric Unions

⁉️ The question is: Why are my new pipes corroding and leaking? ⁉️💦

💬 The answer is: Connecting copper and black iron pipes without a dielectric union will cause accelerated corrosion of the more reactive metal (the black iron) due to galvanic corrosion. The iron will corrode significantly faster than normal, potentially leading to premature leaks. 💦

💥 A dielectric union is essential to physically separate the metals and prevent this reaction. 💥

🛠️ Black iron is more reactive than copper, so it will corrode (rust) rapidly when connected directly to copper. However, without a dielectric union, the iron pipe will fail much sooner than it would on its own.

💡 How to prevent it? 💡
Install a dielectric union: This is the most effective and code-required solution. A dielectric union includes an insulator that physically separates the copper and iron, stopping the galvanic corrosion process.

🤔 So why do some companies not use a dielectric union? That is another great question…

⚠️ The corroded pipe you see in the photo is LESS than a year old, the piping in the video, with the dielectric union, is 8 years old. ⚠️
